“The Orbital Perspective could wind up being the most important tale ever told from space.”
Have you ever had a dream that felt real? A dream so real that it changed your life forever? That’s exactly what happened to Alexa, a young girl with great curiosity and a wild imagination. Put on your spacesuit and go on a journey with Alexa that starts in the classroom and ends on the moon! This story aims to inspire children to dream big and never stop being curious about space.
Floating in Darkness, the sequel to Ron’s critically acclaimed first book The Orbital Perspective, adds the perspective of inner space to take the reader on a profound journey of discovery. It addresses fundamental aspects of the evolution of society and humanity and serves as a call to action to help steer the trajectory of our society toward a future we would all want to be a part of.
In 1991 I was asked to fight a war for my country and the world. Although I believed and still believe that war is humanity’s biggest failure, I had no moral reservations going into combat during Operation Desert Storm. I was willing to give my life if need be, to a cause that I believed was just.
I once again feel a calling devote my life to a cause. But this cause is not a conventional war. This is not a war of aggression, not a two-dimensional fight between us and them. For the first time in my life, I am filled with a deep concern for our future. A very narrow and dangerous worldview has risen into the mainstream. This coupled with decades of pilotless drift toward environmental and social cliffs has led to a very dangerous trajectory. I believe that mindsets, actions, and policies that are being “sold” as beneficial to us are actually leading us to the brink of destruction. I truly believe that what we do in the next few years will determine whether or not humanity thrives and evolves or destroys itself.
I believe that the awe-inspiring perspective of our planet from space holds the key to victory. It is the unifying missing link. In order to come out on the other side of the divisive turmoil that is all around us, we must completely flip our perspective.
The stakes have never been higher.
Only by zooming out to get outside of our problems can we reframe our problems in a way that allows us to solve them. We need to shoot for an aspirational destination. By focusing on a destination where all of humanity and the entire living ecosystem are thriving we necessarily lead folks to think collaboratively and interdependently for the long-term.
I am personally asking you to become an immune cell in a growing immune response that is helping to shift people’s perspective away from the cancerous selfishness of parochialism, tribalism, nationalism, racism, sexism, and limited short-term thinking toward the bigger, more accurate picture.
I am asking you to take a small step with me in the right direction. We are building a community of people who will help shift the trajectory of our society toward a better future for all.
